5 things to do in burbage on a sunday

Wondering what to do in Burbage this Sunday?

You don’t need to travel far for a good day out. Burbage has woodland walks, centuries of local history, independent places to eat, a four-star hotel and spa, and now its own professional comedy club.

Whether you want a quiet afternoon or a full day out with friends, here are five things to do in Burbage on a Sunday.

5 Things to do on a sunday - burbage common

1. Start with a walk around Burbage Common and Woods

There are few better ways to begin a Sunday than with some fresh air at Burbage Common and Woods.

Covering around 85 hectares, the nature reserve brings together open grassland and ancient woodland, with plenty of paths to explore. You can choose a gentle stroll across the Common or disappear into the woods for a slightly longer walk.

It’s particularly beautiful when the seasons begin to change, although it remains a popular destination throughout the year. You’ll find dog walkers, runners, families and plenty of people working up an appetite for Sunday lunch.

If it has been raining, sensible footwear is highly recommended. The mud at Burbage Common has claimed many an overly optimistic pair of trainers.

2. Explore old Burbage and visit the new Burbage Café

After your walk, head towards the historic heart of the village.

The area around Church Street and St Catherine’s Church offers a glimpse of an older Burbage, before the village expanded into the large community it is today.

St Catherine’s Church is one of Burbage’s most recognisable buildings, with parts of the church dating back hundreds of years. The surrounding streets, cottages and older buildings make this an enjoyable place for a relaxed Sunday wander.

While you’re there, call into the newly opened Burbage Coffee Shop for a coffee and something to eat.

It’s always good to see a new independent business opening locally, and stopping for a coffee gives you another reason to slow down and enjoy the village rather than simply passing through it.

Check the café’s current Sunday opening times before making a special journey.

3. Settle in for Sunday lunch at The Cross Keys

By this point, you will have earned a proper Sunday lunch.

The Cross Keys is a traditional Burbage pub and a natural choice for a relaxed Sunday meal with family or friends.

Sunday lunch is one of the few meals where doing very little afterwards is actively encouraged, so take your time. Enjoy your roast, consider pudding and congratulate yourself on not having to cook or wash up.

If you’re planning to attend an evening comedy show, an earlier table gives you plenty of time to enjoy lunch without rushing.

Menus, serving times and availability can change, so check with The Cross Keys and reserve a table before visiting.

4. Spend the afternoon at Sketchley Grange Hotel and Spa

For an altogether more relaxing Sunday, book some time at Sketchley Grange Hotel and Spa.

Situated on Sketchley Lane in Burbage, the four-star hotel is home to Romans Spa and Leisure. Facilities include a swimming pool, sauna, steam room and spa pool, with a selection of treatments and spa experiences also available.

You could spend the afternoon having a treatment, relaxing beside the pool or simply enjoying lunch, afternoon tea or a drink at the hotel.

Check the hotel’s current Sunday packages and book ahead, particularly if you would like a treatment or plan to visit as a group.

There is another advantage to spending Sunday afternoon at Sketchley Grange: when you have finished relaxing, you won’t need to go anywhere else for the evening.

Burbage Comedy Club

5. Finish your Sunday with live comedy

On selected Sunday evenings, the Bradgate Suite at Sketchley Grange is transformed into Burbage Comedy Club.

Our In Bed for 10 shows bring some of the best professional comedians from the UK comedy circuit to Burbage. Each show features a carefully selected line-up of established acts, including comedians seen on television, heard on the radio and appearing at leading comedy clubs around the country.

This is a full professional comedy-club experience, with theatre-style seating, stage lighting, a licensed bar and several comedians performing across the evening.

The idea behind In Bed for 10 is very simple: Sunday shouldn’t mean choosing between having a proper night out and feeling vaguely human on Monday morning.

Doors open at 6pm, the show begins at 7pm and everything finishes early, so you can be home and in bed before 10. There is free parking at the hotel, and the bar is open before and during the show.

Meet friends for a drink, enjoy an evening of professional live comedy and still be home at a sensible time.

Previous Burbage shows have attracted a fantastic response, so booking in advance is strongly recommended.

Make a full Sunday of it

If you wanted to fit all five ideas into one day, your Sunday in Burbage could look like this:

  • A morning walk around Burbage Common and Woods

  • Coffee at the newly opened Burbage Café

  • Sunday lunch at The Cross Keys

  • A relaxing afternoon at Sketchley Grange

  • Professional live comedy, finished before 10pm

Of course, attempting all five isn’t compulsory. This is supposed to be a relaxing Sunday, not a competitive event.

But the next time someone tells you there is nothing to do locally, you can point them in the direction of Burbage.
